Hydrolysed Protein – what’s it all about?
When it comes to performance horses, adequate intake of high quality protein can mean the difference between winning and losing. The Pro-Am range from Foran’s uses a Hydrolysed Protein of plant origin, which has a high concentration of Glutamine peptide.
Glutamine performs many roles in the body. Research has shown glutamine to be important in the proper functioning of the digestive system, the immune system and the muscular system. Recent human studies have shown that the body's concentration of glutamine is significantly decreased during times of severe bodily stress, such as occurs during illness and prolonged exercise. Today, TPN (total parenteral nutrition), a specially formulated food prepared for the critically ill patient invariably includes Glutamine. Glutamine plays a major role in the infection-fighting "immune" system. Many immune cells, such as lymphocytes and macrophages, use glutamine as much if not more than glucose as an energy source. Glutamine acts as a type of fuel for the rapidly dividing cells such as enterocytes, colonocytes, lymphocytes and fibroblasts. Enterocytes (epithelial cells lining the small intestine) use glutamine as their primary fuel for metabolic function. A lack of glutamine leads to a loss of epithelial cell integrity in the lining of the intestines. In turn, researchers suggest this to be a reason for increased likelihood of entry of toxins and infectious agents into the body. Glutamine supplementation is important for recovery and may play a role in helping reduce infections and preventing the breakdown of muscle especially after prolonged stress or strenuous exercise. Research has shown that glutamine appears to be involved in maintaining muscle mass. Under severe stress conditions, when glutamine levels are low, the body may respond by breaking down muscle to obtain glutamine, whereas, experts believe that if glutamine is properly supplemented during these situations, the unnecessary breakdown of muscle may be avoided. In fact, researchers believe that glutamine supplementation may increase protein synthesis in the body.
Peptides are so much easier for the horse to digest than straight protein. Protein peptides are far less likely to create a protein allergy and are the least wasteful form of protein since they are fully absorbed. Because the peptides are pre-digested during their production, the horse uses less energy and creates less heat assimilating them. Their benefits include increased lean muscle mass, improved work rates, shortened recovery periods, delayed muscle fatigue and an enhanced immune system. Test results indicate that trainers are reporting a marked improvement in their horses performance when their diet is supplemented with this product.
The Pro-Am range is designed to:
